Katie Holmes’ new hairdo: Androgynous?
Androgynous, can I have the definition please? Neither clearly masculine nor clearly feminine in appearance. Can you please you it in a sentence? Katie Holmes’ new hair do is androgynous as it closely resemblances her not so masculine husband, Tom Cruise’s look in the late eighties, early nineties.
Over the last decade women have been breaking through the perceived femininity gap, adding more power to the power suit then imagined, sporting shorter more masculine hair styles, nearing the less is more in terms of makeup. As Holmes is proving, the subtly of the ‘bob’ and its less than girly appearance makes for a bold new step for women; it is having the same reaction as Sinead O’Connor’s shaved head in the early nineties, women all over are asking their stylist for the latest Katie ‘do.
Hairstyles like this one are beginning to blur the previously obvious line between styles for me, and then those for women. The seemingly effortless male-esque hair styles are popping up on women, almost as much as lovely flowing locks are on men. Is Katie starting, or rather completing, the beginning to an androgynous perspective on style? Men ARE beginning to wear skirts (see previous article entitled Men in Skirts, author ME for reference), maybe we are becoming more liberal with the notion of discernible aesthetic differences between men and women. Let’s just hope that it doesn’t come to the traditional sex distinguishing we have with animals; I am NOT about to be lifting people up and ‘glancing’ in particular areas to ‘make sure’.
