HBO Canada Coming Soon!
HBO Canada will be arriving on October 30th! Now you can catch up on your favourite shows like Entourage, True Blood and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
This move is taking place through an agreement with Corus Entertainment Inc. and Astral Media Inc., the network’s parents companies. HBO Canada will be launched by The Movie Network and will feature HBO’s full slate of programming. Along with the American titles, by staying true to Canada, they will also offer Canadian films and series such as Durham County and Terminal City.
Canadians already had access to HBO’s most popular television series in the past (Sex in the City, The Sopranos) but was only available on pay TV. Now those shows will be available on HBO Canada, with the network having its own dedicated channel.
The catch for Canadian viewers: HBO Canada will be available at no extra charge for cable and satellite users who already subscribe to TMN or Movie Central. For an added $15/month, HBO Canada will be sold as part of these packages. But on the up-side, they will carry titles currently not available in Canada that include: HBO Boxing, Real Time with Bill Maher and Def Comedy Jam.
HBO is credited with changing the terrain of television. With the network taking a chance on shows like The Sopranos in the 1990’s, they were the first to produce their own prime-time programming. This strategy allowed HBO to take chances on such shows which other networks deemed too risky.
