Trend Watch: Arabic Style Scarf
Being sold in major brands such as H&M, Urban Planet and Buffalo and even little boutiques on Queen St., Toronto – the Arabic scarf is being worn by everyone from locals to celebrities.
Dunkin Donuts pulled an ad in which Rachel Ray wears the scarf that resembles a keffiyeh – a traditional headdress worn by Arab men. The ad was pulled due to Michelle Malkin and other conservative commentators claiming that the ad promoted Islamic terrorism and threatened to boycott the company.
ABC News anchors commented on the controversy on Good Morning America: Diane Sawyer said, “It’s unbelievable.” Chris Cuomo also commented, “It’s the thinking also, though, to say that ‘that fashion means terrorism.’ That’s a dangerous type of thinking, it really is.” Sam Champion says, “Before you even make some crazy statement like that you should try to understand where the pattern came from and what that means.”
The scarf has become a major fashion statement and has been seen worn by celebrities such as Kanye West, David Beckham, Collin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst and the Olsen twins.
The checkered patterned scarf with tassels can be found in almost any color, ranging from $10 and up. It’s cute, it’s chic and it’s in fashion, regardless of what Michelle Malkin says!
