Betsey Johnson turns 30
If Betsey Johnson had to be described in one word, it would be original. From her unique sense of fashion to her famous cartwheels at the end of each fashion show, Johnson has an undying spirit about her.
On Thursday, July 31, friends and family gathered around drinking pink champagne in the celebration of Betsey Johnson’s 30th anniversary of her business.
During the big celebration, Johnson partied it up with her business partner and CEO Chantal Bacon.
Johnson and Bacon met in 1975 when Bacon moved to New York from London. Bacon was selling Johnson’s children’s wear line. The two instantly clicked and shared a common glam rock style, deciding to become partners.
The Betsey Johnson branch was originally launched by Johnson and Bacon in 1978, on Johnson’s birthday, August 10.
“We were very much in the moment every day,” said Bacon. “There was never a big grand plan, we just wanted to have a nice time, make good clothes and have a successful business.”
“When we started, we were doing everything. It was crazy!” said Johnson.
“The first show, I sat everyone, and then I modeled, and the next day I went to the showroom and sold it, and then I paid the bills, and Betsey did the patterns,” continued Bacon.
Even after thirty years of a successful business, this fashion icon is still making her mark on the world.
