EBay Inc. was ordered by a French court to pay $63 mill. to LVMH, which produces Louis Vuitton and Dior products.

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton claimed in the lawsuit that the auction company has not put a stand on the sale of counterfeit goods and perfumes by the company.

“It’s a groundbreaking decision that will help protect creativity,” said Pierre Gode, a member of LVMH’s supervisory board and adviser to the Chairman.

“Today’s ruling is about an attempt by LMVH to protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice in the lively hood of law abiding sellers that EBay empowers everyday. We will fight this ruling on their behalf.”

LMVH claims that in 2006 90% of Louis Vuitton and Dior labeled perfumes, watches and handbags on EBay were counterfeit. Online sales of fakes cost the original maker about $30 billion a year.

In addition of the payment EBay was ordered to post the ruling on all of it’s sites in both English and French for three weeks and have it put in three French or international publications of LVMH’s choice, at their (EBay) expense.
