Marimekko vs Dolce & Gabbana: intellectual property battle over Unikko textile
For shame!
Finnish textile design company Marimekko is fighting to protect its trademark on a “Unikko” (poppy) pattern after the Italian fashion house, Dolce & Gabbana creates a copy cat cousin.
Marimekko currently estimates that there are no grounds for Dolce & Gabbana’s application for a declaration of invalidity” says the finnish company about the trademark.
D&G has submitted an application to the European Union agency for the registered trade marks and designs to have the Unikko trademark voided. The Finnish company filed suit against the Italian company in Hamburg earlier this year to stop it from using the deign, and the court had granted an injunction on sales and marketing of certain D&G products in Germany.
“Merimekko is considering further measures in this matter,” says the company, adding that it plan s to respond to D&G’s application before the deadline of September 25.
