Ralph Lauren to design official uniform of US Olympic Team

Polo Raulph Lauren has been named the official outfitter for the U.S. team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. They will be responsible of designers outfits for over 1500 athletes for all of their times at the Olympics including for the opening ceremony, closing ceremony and also their off time.

This is actually interesting as it used to be Canadian company Roots that were responsible for the U.S. team in the past three Olympic games. It was believed that the Roots designers were too informal. The total dollar amount is less than $10 million, but there is interest in extending the relationship to the coming Winter Olympics in 2010 and also the next Summer Olympics in 2012.

This is actually a very interested development as Polo’s current market share in Asia is small compared with its American and European counterparts. They hope that the Beijing Olympic games, which is expected to command a viewership of over four billion, will fast-forward the brand’s expansion in the region. We’ll see how it unfolds.
