Primark takes action on child labour
Primark, the UK budget fashion chain, has abandoned 3 suppliers from Southern India after they found out they are using child labour to produce garments. Primark has found out its suppliers have sub-contracted with other companies who use child labour to produce clothes including embroidery work.
Primark, who is very strict on ethical issues, has stated that they will not tolerate any of it.
“Work was being given out by unauthorised middlemen and that is enough for us to cease trading with these suppliers.” A spokesperson for Primark had said.
George Weston, the chief executive for Associated British Foods (parent company of Primark), also said, “We are appalled, we feel let down and we are taking all the action we can to prevent this happening again.”
Primark will hire a non-governmental company to be Primark’s eyes and ears to prevent anymore of these practices from happening again.
