Celebrity Fashionistas Design For Billabong’s Design for Humanity Charity
Billabong, makers of laid-back surfer wear, have just wrapped their 2nd Annual Design For Humanity Charity held on June 4th, 2008. The event fused the three things that rely on inspiration from one another: fashion, music, and art.
The night took place at Hollywood’s Avalon/Spider Club, and included everything from a runway fashion show featuring celebrity designs, a photography and art exhibit, a live performance by rising electro-pop duo MGMT, and DJ Steve Aoki spinning tracks late into the night.
The art and photography exhibit featured some of the most esteemed artists in the field. Wolfgang Bloch, Casey O’Connell, and Dustin Humphrey, a big name in surfer magazines, were just some of the contributors.

The highlight of the night, the runway show, showcased Billabong’s fashions, and one-of-a-kind bikinis designed in collaboration with the likes of actresses Amber Valletta, Mischa Barton, and designer Charlotte Ronson (her bikini shown above), whose family name is climbing the notoriety scale. Even exclusive t-shirts from Urban Outfitters were available for sale, designed by Internet style phenomenon, Cory Kennedy.
All of this was to benefit The Surfrider Foundation, which aims to preserve the world’s oceans and beaches. Almost anything you could shake a stick at was donated to the charity. All the work done by the artists, photographers, and designers were auctioned off on eBay with proceeds going straight to the foundation, along with 100% of all tickets sales for the event.
The public arrived in droves to witness this unforgettable night. The idea to channel people’s love for music, art, and fashion into a good cause only made everyone all the more passionate in ensuring the night was a hit. It’s no wonder that, although only in its second year, the Design For Humanity Charity is consistently a success and will likely continue its annual run for years to come.
“This event is a labor of love for our Brand,” says Candy Harris, Women’s Brand Director at Billabong. “It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate fashion, music and art all the while giving back to an organization that preserves our way of life.”
