Paris Fashion Week: Vivienne Westwood
Designer Vivienne Westwood used her Spring 2008 fashion show to present her “active resistance manifesto”. Westwood entitled her collection “56” in protest to a plan by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to increase the number of days terror suspects can be held in jail without a trial. Some of the models were even wrapped in drapes bearing that number. The political message that the 66 year-old designer tried to convey was expressed by confused and anarchy dominated looks. Held in a room in the Louvre art museum, the show presented numerous bustiers, hooded capes, dresses covered in fringes and exotic skins, and heavy volume evening gowns. . “It looks tribal, tough, and rock & roll,” said Westwood. Singer Kanye West and buyers from major stores (Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridge) graced the front row.
